The Role of AI in Fall Prevention Among Older Adults
Falls currently rank as the leading cause of injury and injury-related deaths for U.S. adults 65 and older, with one in four falling each year per Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data reported on by Elder Law Answers. Falling can have devastating consequences for seniors, resulting in everything from broken bones to hospital stays. To combat the problem, emerging AI technology in high-end senior living communities is using sensors and predictive analytics to monitor movement, detect changes in patterns, and help prevent falls. So far, this technology has shown promising results, with one assisted living community reporting a 40 percent reduction in falls post-implementation. There are privacy concerns, though, including the sensitivity of the movement data collected and the process of obtaining resident consent for monitoring. Affordable and low-tech alternatives for fall prevention ranging from using wearable alert devices to choosing sensible footwear.
