Weeks ahead of last year's updated COVID-19 vaccine approvals, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration officially approved Moderna and Pfizer's updated vaccines on Aug. 22, states CNBC News. The vaccines target the KP.2 strain of the virus, which is a descendant of omicron subvariant JN.1, and consumers are likely to see the vaccines on the market within days. KP.2 has been the dominant COVID strain since May, and Pfizer and Moderna say that their updated vaccines can produce strong immunity responses to other variants of JN.1, including KP.3 and LB.1.
